The Gregoria lounge takes its name from Ito Kish's mother, Gregoria Kish, and is a testament to the designer's love for his country and its heritage. The inspiration for this design came from the intricately designed balustrades found in traditional Filipino homes. Balustrades have long been a staple element in Filipino architecture, introduced by the Spaniards during their 300-year stay in the country.
Instead of relegating the balustrades to a purely decorative role, Ito Kish saw their potential to be transformed into a functional and visually stunning piece of furniture. The Gregoria lounge features a semi-circular design, accommodating 2 to 3 people comfortably. The backrest is made of kiln-dried Gmelina balusters in a natural finish, while the seat is crafted from split rattan solihiya in a sunburst pattern.
What sets the Gregoria lounge apart is the attention to detail and the play on textures. The balusters are set at different heights, highlighting the overall textured quality of the piece. Each baluster is ornately carved, showcasing the craftsmanship and skill of Filipino artisans. The intricate weaves of the split rattan solihiya seat add another layer of visual interest.
One of the key strengths of the Gregoria lounge is its commitment to sustainability. All the materials used in its construction are locally sourced and sustainable. Gmelina, the wood used for the balusters, is a fast-growing hardwood that is both durable and environmentally friendly. The rattan used for the seat is also farmed and sourced locally in the Philippines.
With its unique blend of Filipino heritage and sustainable design, the Gregoria lounge is a true testament to Ito Kish's creativity and vision. It not only showcases the beauty of traditional Filipino design but also promotes the use of sustainable materials and practices in the world of furniture design.
The Gregoria lounge was unveiled in October 2012, just in time for Manila Fame, the Philippines' largest trade show. Since then, it has garnered recognition and accolades, including the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2013. This award recognizes the outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill demonstrated by the Gregoria lounge.
